Kimberly Colbertson has enough baby formula for a few days.

“That’s all I have,” she said. “He goes through one bath every four days.”

Too bad her family delivers the mixture to their home in Florida from the Midwest. And she meanwhile hovers the earth.

“It’s literally, a two and a half hour drive like … Well, where do I find it?” She asked.

Megan Horaman is feeling her pain in Ohio.

“Of all the things to feel the deficit … It’s very stressful that this is a formula,” she said. “Like … The birth of a child in a pandemic and … Now I’m struggling with a lack of mix.”

A serious recall occurred about one of the most valuable items for moms. Now about 40% of baby formulas are missing.

As a result of the FDA’s recall of major brands after several infants fell ill with rare infections from Abbott Nutrition blends.

At the top of the already fastidious supply chain it causes panic.

Dr. Lauren Bean is a pediatrician from Ohio.

“I would never recommend making your own formula at home. That’s what came up,” she said.

Bean says improper use of the mixture can have long-term effects on infant health. Therefore, do not dilute the mixture to make it last longer. But parents shouldn’t be afraid to change a brand if that’s all they can find.

As always, talk to your pediatrician first.

“Your child may not like it right away if it’s not what they’re used to, but it’s medically safe to change the brand of the mixture,” Ben continued.

The White House says it is coordinating with manufacturers to quickly increase production.

But meanwhile, parents have nowhere to turn, as even food banks are feeling the damage.

Debbie Gally is the executive director of the East Nashville Cooperative Ministry.

“I don’t know of any food bank or any organization that would give a formula,” she said.

“The formula seems to be the new toilet paper,” said Florida mom Katie Moore. “We just really need it here.”
