WNBA star Britney Greener will have her detention extended by 30 days after she appeared in a Moscow court hearing.
Two-time Olympic gold medalist Greener was detained at Moscow’s airport after vape cartridges containing cannabis oil were allegedly found in her luggage, for which she could face up to 10 years in prison.
The Biden administration says 31-year-old Greener is being detained illegally. Representatives of the WNBA and the United States worked on her release, but without visible progress.
The 31-year-old has been one of the league’s most prolific stars since her professional debut in 2013. She has participated seven times in All-Star Game and is consistently one of the WNBA’s top scorers.
Despite her stardom in the WNBA, unlike her NBA counterparts, she also plays professionally abroad.
The U.S. State Department said earlier this week that it would not discuss efforts to free Greener from Russian arrest.
