The Atascader Fire and Emergency Service is 100 years old
The Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services Department is celebrating its 100th anniversary of community service this year.
On Saturday, the department held a celebration at Fire Department 1, beginning with a flag-giving ceremony for the 51st Boy Scout Squadron, as well as fire safety demonstrations, including readiness for forest fires. Ancient fire engines were exhibited by community members. All members of the public were invited to participate.
According to a department release, in 1915, Atascadero fire protection was initially provided by volunteers who went to the scene; they were paid $ 1.00 for the fire. In 1922, the Ataskader Fire Department was officially established in response to a 5,000-acre forest fire. The first fire station was built in 1927 on Traffic Way. The building still stands in the heart of Ataskader.
