ALISO VIEJO, California (AP) – Friends and colleagues of Dr. John Cheng say they were not surprised that a quiet, kind and calm sports medicine doctor saved others by throwing himself at an armed man who shot during lunch at a Southern California church.
The 52-year-old father of two was known for doing his best to protect people.
He even took courses to prepare for such a horrific event, concerned about the rise in mass shootings.
Active experts on shooters argue that preparedness combined with Chen’s serene temperament probably gave him a penchant for heroic action.
Cheng was killed and five were injured in Sunday’s shooting.
Authorities believe he saved perhaps dozens of lives.
