SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A blizzard over the weekend added a heavy snowpack to California’s mountains, leaving ice in the Sierra Nevada early Monday.

Chains were required on sections of Sierra Highway, but the local avalanche warning for much of Lake Tahoe ended around sunrise.

About 74 miles (119 kilometers) of US 395 were closed Sunday due to the whiteout, according to the California Department of Transportation.

The storm dropped 16 to 24 inches (40 to 61 centimeters) of snow on Mammoth Mountain in the Eastern Sierra, bringing the season’s total so far to the main lodge to more than 400 inches (1,016 cm), according to the resort’s website.

“It’s incredibly cold out there,” the resort said.
