The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department said the search would be delayed “for some time” due to the storm.

Numerous searches have already taken place on foot and by air, with both state and federal agencies using special technology to help determine a more precise location to focus their efforts.

A spokesman for the sheriff’s department told the PA news agency that the ground search, which had recently been hampered by poor conditions on the mountain, was underway on Saturday.

“On February 18, more than 20 members of the Fountain Sheriff’s Department and the West Valley Search and Rescue team conducted a search in the Baldy Mountain area,” the spokesperson told the PA agency.

“Crew members focused on the location where a California Highway Patrol RECCO device collided with a possible electronic device on January 25th.

“Unfortunately, nothing was found that would lead to the identification of Mr. Sands. With the storm approaching, ground searches for Mr. Sands will be delayed for some time.

“Our goal is to stop Mr. Sands’ family, and if we can, we will try again.”

Three weeks ago, Sands’ hiking partner and friend Kevin Ryan told PA it was clear “something went wrong” but that the actor’s experience and skills would “hopefully” lead to his safe return.

The actor’s family previously praised the “heroic” efforts of California authorities involved in the search and were “deeply touched” by the support they received.

“Our heartfelt thanks go out to the compassionate San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department who coordinated the search for our beloved Julian, and last but not least to the heroic search teams … who braved difficult conditions on the ground and in the air to bring Julian home,” the statement read.

“We are deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support.”

Sands is best known for his starring roles in films such as The Warlock, A Room with a View and Leaving Las Vegas. On television, he rose to fame with roles in Smallville and 24.

He has three children and lives in the North Hollywood area of Los Angeles with his wife, writer Yevgenia Titkovits.

It was previously revealed that pings from Sands’ phone showed he was on the move, heading further into the Baldy Bowl mountain area on the day he was reported missing.

A spokesman said: “Attempts were made by the mobile operator to make additional beeps but were unsuccessful due to the lack of mobile service and most likely a mobile phone power failure.

“Delayed ping via Apple iPhone Sands operating system” dated January 14, 2023 revealed a possible location on one of the trails leading to the summit of Mount Baldy. The area was checked by ground searchers and a helicopter.”

The spokesman added: “Ground and air searchers have been unable to find any evidence in the area which would assist in locating Mr Sands. Due to avalanche risk and trail conditions, ground crews were pulled from the mountain Saturday night.

“However, the search is continuing with the help of helicopters and drones, weather permitting. Additional ground searches will be planned when the weather improves and it is safe for our rescuers to do so.”

The department also previously said there was still “no hard deadline” and “no date set” for the effort to end — and the incident was still classified as a search and rescue operation.

The search by local authorities continues with the help of “helicopters and drones, weather permitting.”

A car belonging to Sands was found earlier this month. It was not far from where he was reported missing around 7:30 p.m. local time on January 13.
