New San Diego State quarterback Jalen Maiden helped lead the Aztecs to a 23-7 win over Nevada on Saturday.

Maiden threw for 156 yards on 12-of-25 passing in the Mountain West contest in Reno, adding a 32-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

“I think he’s getting better as we go. He has some grit and you like that,” head coach Brady Hoke told CBS Sports Network.

Jack Browning, a West Hills High graduate, made three field goals; the longest, 30 yards, came in the first quarter. He made 12 of 13 on the season.

Also, Braxton Burmeister, whom Maiden replaced at quarterback, made his SDSU debut as a wide receiver with 19 yards.

Defensively, Justus Tawai had his first career interception, while Michael Shawcroft made six solo tackles, followed by Cédric Lakalaka with four.

With the win, San Diego State (4-3, 2-1 in the MW) moved above the .500 mark, while the Wolfpack (2-6, 0-4) continued to struggle, losing their sixth straight game.

Three MW teams share a 2-1 conference record – SDSU, Fresno State and San Jose State.

That raises the stakes for next week, when the Aztecs stay on the road, heading north to face the Bulldogs (3-4, 2-1 in MW) on Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
