Congresswoman Barbara Lee, D-Calif., announced Tuesday that she will join a competitive race for the 2024 Senate seat. Senator Dianne Feinstein is retiring.

“Californians deserve a strong, progressive leader who brings real change,” Lee, 76, said in a social media post as she unveiled her long-rumored campaign for the coveted seat.

Lee’s announcement makes her the third major Democratic candidate to contest the seat Feinstein has held since 1992. Reps. Kathy Porter and Adam Schiff, both California Democrats, have already hit the ground running.

If elected in 2024, Lee would become the only black woman to serve in the U.S. Senate.
