Bill Maher says the nation’s ‘monofocus on race’ is ‘short-circuiting’ solutions to ‘real problems’

Late-night host Bill Maher decried America’s “monofocus on race,” saying it was distracting from some of the country’s “real problems.”

On his show “Real Time with Bill Maher” Friday night, Maher pointed out that much of the violence in the past few weeks has been perpetrated by non-white people.

29-year-old Tyr Nichols, for example, was beaten to death on January 7 by five black police officers, while two mass shootings in the past week were committed by Asian men California.

Hu Kang Chan, 72, shot himself dead after killing 11 people at a party in Monterey Park over the weekend, and Chunli Zhao, 66, is charged with shooting seven people and wounding another in the Half Moon Bay area.

Late night host Bill Maher blasted America’s “mono-focus” on race on Friday, saying it’s a distraction from bigger issues

Maher began his panel discussion Friday with former Congressman Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, and The Free Press founder Barry Weiss, by describing the “outrage” that has been unleashed at these recent tragedies.

“This week people learned the names of several towns here in California, Half Moon Bay and Monterey Park were different,” he began.

“And you know, such shootings happen. We go through this ritual where we then wait for them to announce the shooter race.

“We’re waiting for the Oscar nominations because, you know, for some reason that’s the most important thing for a lot of people.

“And I thought it was very interesting that Asians were killed by Asians this week — two Asians who were 66 and 72 years old.

“And this week we just got the Memphis Five video. A black man was brutally beaten by five police officers in Memphis. They are all black.

“I guess what I’m asking is the American culture of violence, it’s really deeper than race, right?

“And I think this monocenter that we have on race is closing us in on trying to fix some of the more real problems. Would you agree?”

Ryan responds that there are definitely deeper issues at play here.

“And this is an opportunity for us to talk. Talking about mental health, talking about guns, talking about…

“The police,” suggests Maher.

“The stress of policing and the stress of cops,” admits Ryan.

“And I’m certainly not defending these guys. This is a tragedy. They should be explored [to the] the full extent of the law, the whole nine yards.

“But if we don’t realize at some level that it’s not the white or black cop who’s underpaid, it’s the underpaid cop,” he said, noting that cops in his congressional district are paid as little as $14 an hour .

At that point, Barry Weiss chimed in, saying that “basically every weekend in Chicago” should be classified as a hate crime because of black-on-black crime in the city.

Barry Weiss, founder of the Free Press, said the race of the perpetrator does not matter to the victim's family

Barry Weiss, founder of the Free Press, said the race of the perpetrator does not matter to the victim’s family

“We hear about a horrific incident, and we want to see the race or identity of the perpetrator and the race and identity of the victim, and we know exactly what it’s going to look like based on that,” she said.

“But does it matter to the family of the murdered person? I really don’t think so.’

Maher responded: “It’s also misleading that everything is always racial. I mean, I feel like that’s one of the great failings of the left these days. They have a mono-focus, you know, again, when the education system is broken, people don’t know a hell of a lot.

“So they focus on something very obvious: black and white. Everyone can understand racism, and of course it’s still a real thing in this country, but it’s not the only thing.”

“Yes,” agreed Weiss. “And black lives should matter when the perpetrator of the crime is white, and black lives should matter when the perpetrator of the crime, as is often the case in cities like Chicago, is black.”

She then said she hoped the new body camera footage wouldn’t lead to new calls to defund the police, something Maher said communities of color would pay the price for.

“Again, who is paying for this when there are fewer and less competent police?” – he asked rhetorically. “Many communities of color want more police.”

The segment was filmed before horrifying dashcam footage was released showing Tyre Nichols being stopped by police, running away, then being brutally beaten when they caught up, and lack of medical care.

Nichols, who was born in Sacramento and moved to Memphis in February 2020, was driving home from a suburban park on Jan. 7 when a police officer said he was “cutting through traffic.”

The police pull him over and one officer orders Nichols around “Pull the fucking car out” before pulling him out.

Nichols can be heard protesting and telling the officer, “Damn it, I didn’t do anything.” Hey, I didn’t.’ The officer tells him, “Turn away.”

Officers try to wrestle Nichols, the father of a four-year-old son, to the ground.

Nichols is seen objecting, but when one of the officers threatens to “Smash you**,” Nichols replies, “Okay, I’m on the ground – I’m on the ground.”

He is sitting, and the officer orders him: “Lie down. Stand on the f***** ground. I’m coming to you Tase. “I’m going to break your shit.”

Nichols was tasered in the left thigh and told, “F***, put your hands behind your back.”

The officers try to handcuff him, saying, “I’m going to beat the hell out of you.”

Nichols replies, “Okay guys, you’re doing a lot right now.” He tells them, “I’m just trying to go home.”

The staff keep trying to get him to lie down. Nichols responds with growing frustration, “I’m on the ground!”

“On the stomach!” – the officer answers. “I can’t breathe,” Nichols said. But the police continue to spray the victim with pepper spray.

“What the hell?” – says one of the officers. Nichols gets to his feet and runs. One officer yells, “Taser, taser!”

Nichols continues to run, partially removing his shirt as he runs. “Oh shit,” one officer says, and both start running after him with pepper spray in their eyes.

Officers eventually caught up with Nichols, and body camera footage shows two officers kneeling over Nichols as he yells, “I didn’t do anything!”

The cops threaten him with pepper spray again as the three officers press him against the pepper spray again.

Soon, one of the officers shoves him on his back, yelling, “Get on your knees.” Nichols lies on his side and screams, “Mommy!”

“Give me your hands. Give me your hands, the officer orders, and Nichols says, “Okay, okay.”

Another officer runs into view and someone says, “Watch out.” The pepper spray is used again, hitting at least one officer in the face.

Other officers can be heard yelling at Nichols to give them his hands, while Nichols continues to yell at his mother.

He tries to get up on his right hand, leaning on his right side, when the third officer kicks him in the upper half of the body, forcing Nichols to lie on his back.

The kicking officer moves to Nichols’ upper body and kicks him again with his right foot, this time in the head.

Soon Nichols is being beaten and unable to stand upright.

However, one of the officers lunges at him and punches him, and the others soon join in,

After about six strikes, Nichols could be seen falling to the floor – his right leg extended, his left leg bent at the knee.

By this point, three officers are on top of him when another runs into view and kicks Nichols in the ribs.

After the brutal beating, Nichols could be seen writhing and twitching, thrashing around on the floor as officers congratulated themselves.

Only 24 minutes after the beating was stopped, an ambulance arrived at the scene.

Nichols was then placed on a stretcher and taken to a local hospital, where he died three days later.

Chunli Zhao, 66, is accused of shooting seven people and wounding another in the Half Moon Bay area

Two mass shootings in California in the past week were allegedly carried out by elderly Asian men. Hu Kang Chan, 72, allegedly opened fire in Monterey Park, and Chunli Zhao, 66, is accused of shooting seven people and wounding another in the Half Moon Bay area.

The gruesome footage emerged as Americans were still reeling from two mass shootings in California.

Authorities say Hu Kang Chan shot 11 people at a Lunar New Year celebration in Monterey Park over the weekend before turning the gun on himself.

He opened fire at Star Dance Studio at 10.22pm last Saturday with his illegal semi-automatic pistol, hitting 20 people aged between 52 and 72.

Tran fired a total of 42 rounds from his 9mm semi-automatic handgun and then drove to another dance hall, where an employee knocked the gun away from him.

The gunman later shot himself dead in his white van, which he used to flee the scene during a standoff with police last Sunday.

The motive for the shooting is unclear, but Tran’s ex-wife confirmed that he was teaching at the studio and was quick to anger. Authorities are investigating whether Tran was looking for his ex-wife when he committed the massacre.

Just days later, Chunli Zhao allegedly shot and killed seven people and wounded another at a nursery and mushroom farm in Half Moon Bay.

Investigators have not publicly released a motive for the shooting, but San Mateo County Sheriff’s spokesman Eamon Allen said signs point to workplace violence.

He said Zhao entered the mushroom farm and opened fire, killing four and seriously wounding another. He then drove to another nearby farm where he used to work and killed three more people.

Zhao was taken into custody hours after the attack when he parked his van at the Half Moon Bay police substation.

He is said to be cooperating with the investigation.
