After landscapers found an old Mercedes-Benz convertible on an Atherton property last Thursday, there was a media frenzy over why it was hidden. Well, the police completely excavated the car on Saturday and sent it to the crime lab to provide more details on the whole situation.

We’ve been following the mysteries (and the increasingly surprising story of the former owner of the 12,634-square-foot home) circles around this 1990s Benz (it was later shown that according to reports stolen in 1992) from Thursday. We know that Johnny Boktun Lew, who was the former owner of the house, was not only charged with insurance fraud in 1999, but was also convicted of 2nd degree murder in 1966… and convicted of attempted murder in 1977 .

Lew’s criminal history only fueled the allegations as to why this looted Benz was buried. Authorities still don’t know why the car ended up underground, but they hope that questions will be answered after further criminal investigation of the car.

According to NBC Bay Area, the vehicle was successfully removed from the multi-million dollar estate at 351 Stockbridge Avenue on Saturday. Again: cadaver dogs have previously signaled the presence of human remains, but no human remains have yet been found – even after the car was completely removed from the area.

Given that Lew once planned to sink his yacht off the Golden Gate Bridge to collect the insurance money, he may have had something similar in mind for this car.

Regardless of the reason, Atherton police officials said they would not have any updates until Monday.
