Butterfly Beach is closed due to a sewage spill

Read Time:1 Minute, 5 Second

The Santa Barbara County Health Department has closed the beach to all recreational water contact at Butterfly Beach in Montecito.

The Montecito Sanitation District notified Santa Barbara County officials of a broken sewer main on Canal Drive that caused an estimated 6,650 gallons of sewage to spill.

The ruptured pipe is currently being repaired and no additional sewage water is expected to be released into the storm drain.

The closure begins within one-quarter mile of the storm sewer outlet.

Warning signs have been posted for the public to avoid contact with the water until the results of water tests confirm that the water is safe for contact again.

Failure to follow posted warning signs may increase the risk of certain types of illness, such as rash, fever, chills, ear infections, vomiting, and diarrhea.
