SELMA, Calif. (AP) — A police officer in California’s Central Valley was shot and killed Tuesday and a suspect was arrested.

A Selma officer was patrolling the small Fresno County town shortly before noon when someone stopped his patrol car and said there was a suspicious person in the yard, KFSN-TV reported.

When the officer got out of the car, he was shot several times. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital. His name was not immediately released.

A 23-year-old man was later located and arrested, and a weapon believed to have been used in the shooting was seized in the area, police said.

“I’m absolutely outraged. I’m terrified right now,” Selma Police Chief Rudy Alcaraz said during a news conference.

Fresno County Sheriff John Zanoni said the motive for the shooting is under investigation but may have been gang-related.

The arrested man had a criminal record that included robbery and gun possession charges and was wanted by probation officers, authorities said.
