California farmers are preparing for a dry winter

CALIFORNIA (KERO) — California farmers wanted to hear the wrong forecast, but a dry winter is coming. At least it’s likely to become a reality again.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has released a winter forecast for California. Photo published by the agency shows a forecast 90 days into the future. The image shows that the Central Valley and southern California will experience below average precipitation.

“La Niña is a decrease in equatorial water temperature,” said Craig Shoemakers, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

La Niña is a dry system moving from Western Canada down through Northern California and heading toward the farmers.

Jasdeep Bains is the Director of Farm Management at Diamond B, specializing in peaches and almonds. Baines is concerned about the agency’s harsh prognosis. Obviously, a lack of rain means lower profits for growers.

“You’ve got to start evaluating people laying off, and that’s going to be a bigger problem because then you’re going to be talking about the unemployment rate,” Baines said.
