Californians don’t have the best reputation on the road, p eight of its cities are in the top 10 list of worst driversbut — perhaps surprisingly — it’s not the worst place to drive in the country.

According to “Wallethub”The best and worst states for driving in 2023,” California barely made the top 10 worst-governed states. The online personal finance service rated 50 states based on travel conditions. Using weighted ratings, it evaluated factors such as the cost of owning and maintaining a vehicle, traffic, safety and affordability of vehicles, and maintenance.

Hawaii is ranked #1 worst state to drive in. Washington followed at No. 2 and Delaware at No. 3.

California ranks 10th.

It also ranks first for the worst rush-hour traffic congestion, followed by Maryland and New Jersey at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. West Virginia was named the best state for rush hour traffic.

What are the best states to drive in?

If you want to be in the best state for riding, look to the Midwest and the South.

Iowa is #1 on the list of best states to drive.

Georgia is No. 2, Ohio is No. 3, Oklahoma is No. 4. North Carolina rounds out the top 5.

What other place does California rank?

According to Wallethub, California has the third highest number of auto thefts. Colorado has the highest rate and Vermont has the lowest.

California also has the highest number of auto repair shops per capita in the country, second only to Hawaii. And — unsurprisingly — California ranked second for the average price of gas. Hawaii ranks first for the highest average fuel prices.

If you’re looking to save on gas, consider Texas to be number one for the lowest average prices.
