Californians who are incarcerated will be able to vote on the proposal

Californians in prison will be allowed to vote under s proposed constitutional amendment introduced Monday.

The state would join two others and the District of Columbia in granting that right to people with felony convictions if lawmakers approve the idea. It was introduced by a deputy Isaac Bryana Democrat from Los Angeles.

The measure requires two-thirds support from both the state Assembly and Senate. It will then need to be approved through a statewide vote.

Brian’s effort follows Proposition 172020 constitutional amendment that gave people the right to vote while on parole. almost 59% voters approved the ballot, which was introduced by a deputy of the Democratic Assembly Kevin McCarthySacramento.

Maine and Vermont are the only states that allow felons in prison to vote. in accordance with National Conference of State Legislatures. California and twenty other states disenfranchise people in prison but restore them after release. NCSL reports.
