A 3.4-magnitude earthquake struck southern California at 2:24 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, near La Quinta, geologists said.

Early morning Earthquake with a magnitude of 3.4 Southern California is outraged, according to the US Geological Survey.

The 3-mile-deep earthquake struck near La Quinta and the Santa Rosa Mountains in Riverside County at 2:24 a.m., according to the USGS.

So far, 41 people from as far away as Escondido and Murrieta have reported feeling the tremors.

La Quinta is a city of 37,000 in the Coachella Valley. The town is located between Indian Wells and Indio and about 25 miles southeast of Palm Springs.

Measures of magnitude released energy at the source of the earthquake, according to the US Geological Survey. It replaces the old Richter scale.

Earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.5 to 5.4 is often felt but rarely cause much damage, according to Michigan Tech. Earthquakes below magnitude 2.5 are rarely felt by most people.
