Schizophrenic ex-boyfriend accused of beheading his ex-girlfriend in broad daylight outside her North California the house was found competent to stand trial.

The trial of Jose Rafael Solano Landaeta, 33, will continue as planned after a court-appointed doctor found the man accused of killing Karen Castro, 27, in September, mentally fit.

Landaeta is accused of using a samurai sword to behead a San Carlos mother of two while her two young daughters, aged seven and one, were in the home.

Before the murder, the young mother had a restraining order against her ex, who is also the father of her one-year-old child.

In February, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaff confirmed to KPIX that the accused killer’s case would be reopened.

The decision was based on a January 26 report by a court-appointed doctor assigned to examine Landaeta.

A Bay Area man was seen in court on Wednesday, shackled and dressed head-to-toe in orange.

Landaetta appeared before San Mateo Judge Rachel Holt, who will oversee his trial.

Earlier, the judge announced that the trial will begin on March 23.

According to the family of the dead mother, Landaetta is a diagnosed schizophrenic and used medication in the past.

She and her family members warned the aspiring rapper to stay away from Castro both legally and unofficially.

Her family spoke to Bay Area Outlets and said they had feared for years that he was harming their daughter.

“Every time I saw her, I was begging her, ‘Don’t talk to him, leave him,'” Marty Castro, the young woman’s father, told ABC7.

“And it seemed like the more I did it, the more she was going to see him,” he continued.

According to Danielle Gannon, Castro’s grandmother, she was an independent woman who was “determined to raise her daughters on her own.”

Gannon said Landaetta often uses his schizophrenia as an excuse for his behavior.

“He was drinking excessively, and you shouldn’t do that on drugs like that,” Gannon explained.

In a September 2022 interview, Marty warned parents, “If someone is abusing your daughter, don’t run away. Don’t let it go. Don’t take no for an answer.”

“You will feel responsible no matter what anyone says,” said the grieving father.

After her body was found, Snapchat messages revealed that Castro may have threatened to expose an alleged relationship with another man.

Landaetta went on to send a threatening message, which her family said eventually led to a confrontation outside her home.

“He got very angry, went to the trunk of his car, pulled out everything that was in there and killed her right there behind her car,” Marty said.

A neighbor told ABC 7 he witnessed the horrific scene from the front steps of his home.

“The head was under the car and it was in the back of the car – just severed,” neighbor Chappell Thorborne said.

Officers responded within minutes and found Castro’s body on the ground.

Landaetta initially allegedly left the scene, but returned and was quickly arrested.

“After he cut her head off, he came over with two of his friends,” Thorborne told the ABC. “They walked by me and arrested him.”
