Firefighters quickly contained a fire Friday morning at the Modesto Municipal Golf Course Clubhouse, according to a fire department incident summary report.
The city closed the nine-hole golf course in west Modesto about two and a half years ago. The summary report said firefighters arrived just after 7 a.m. to find the vacant clubhouse on fire. There are no casualties, the cause of the fire is being investigated.
There was no other information for the past weekend.
Fires have become a common occurrence in Modesto Park and Recreation Areas in recent years. Some of the fires include:
▪ July fire in the early morning that engulfed the city American Legion Memorial Hall at Tuolumne River Regional Park. The fire remains under investigation, though investigators say it may have been started by homeless people. The fire could have started out of control or was set on purpose.
▪ August 2020 night fire which caused significant damage to the Dryden Park Golf Course Club. A spokeswoman for the police department said a motive has not been determined.
▪ July 2021. Fire of the farm building on the street McClure Mansionan 1881 homestead that the city purchased in the early 1970s.
▪ A 2019 fire at the American Legion Memorial Hall Annex, which was known as the Little Legion Hall. The extension was beyond repair and was demolished.
This is an incomplete list and does not include vegetation fires in city parks.
Modesto closed its municipal golf course because it could no longer afford the city’s three courses. The city held meetings Tuesday and Wednesday last week to solicit public comment on a concept plan for housing, commercial development and recreation on the 54-acre site.
The the vast majority of people who advocated the use of the golf course for open space and recreation.
These were the third and fourth meetings in the city regarding the renovation of the golf course. City officials will now review comments from last week’s meetings and determine the city’s next steps.
