Firefighters in Monterey will begin a fire safety inspection in June

The Monterey Fire Service will begin safety inspections of forest fires next month. They are available to all properties in Monterey, Pacific Grove, Carmel by Sea and Sand City. These defensive space inspections are conducted annually to minimize fire spread and increase and reduce potential losses in the event of a forest fire, according to the Monterey Fire Department. All property will be inspected, including residential, commercial and vacant plots. Upon completion of the inspection will be left a notice of any corrective action to be taken by the owner / resident. The message will be in the form of a sticky notice left on the front door or near the front door. Notices of vacant lots will be sent to the property owner. Further re-inspections will take place in 30 days to make sure the owners are properly preparing their property and complying with state and local regulations. Owners and residents are encouraged to be proactive in protecting their property in the event of a fire by following these steps: • Maintain cut grass 4 inches or less • Remove leaves, pine needles and debris from roofs and gutters • Remove dead and dying vegetation within 100 feet of your home or building (or from the property boundary if it is less than 100 feet) • Remove stair fuel (vegetation under trees) so as not to reach the surface fire crown • Clouds of trees 6 feet above the ground ; for lower trees do not exceed 1/3 of the total height • Remove branches within 10 feet of chimneys • Remove vegetation and objects that may catch fire from around and under decks and stairs. Owners and residents are encouraged to be proactive to make their property defensive in the event of a fire by following these steps:

• Keep grass mowed 4 inches or less

• Remove leaves, needles and debris from roofs and gutters

• Remove dead and dying vegetation within 100 feet of your home or building (or from the property boundary if less than 100 feet)

• Remove the fuel for the stairs (vegetation under the trees) so that the fire on the surface cannot reach the crowns

• Tree rims at a height of 6 feet from the ground; for lower trees does not exceed 1/3 of the total height of the tree

• Clean branches within 10 feet of chimneys

• Remove vegetation and objects that can catch fire from the surroundings and under decks and stairs
