Fraudsters strike at a local bank with a skimmer

FRESNA, Calif. (KFSN) – A local couple speaks out and warns people that they were recently deceived at Bank of America in downtown Fresno …

Harley Roach said his partner made a transaction at an outside ATM at Bank of America on Fresno Street on May 3rd. Two days later, she noticed that a significant amount of money was missing.

“She noticed that on the 5th, $ 1,400 was withdrawn from her account. She will have only $ 15 left, ”Rovch said.

Roach believes these scammers used a skimmer to steal the money, and when he returned to the ATM for an investigation, he noticed it wasn’t working.

“The ATM itself is closed, you can no longer access it, and it looks like something was withdrawn where a credit card is usually included,” Roach added.

The same ATM is up and running again at the end of Friday.

Action News contacted Bank of America regarding the incident, and they responded in part with this statement:

“Our ATMs are regularly inspected by our staff as well as ATM technicians to ensure that when skimming devices are detected they are quickly removed. Customers are protected from financial loss as a result of this crime through our zero liability policy.”

In this case, the card used was an EDD debit card, which falls under a different set of protocols when it comes to returning stolen funds.

“Technically, these are Bank of America prepaid cards. They are not debit or credit cards, so they are not covered by the same money back or fraud guarantee,” Roach said.

We spoke to Fresno police about the incident, and they shared these tips on how not to become a victim yourself:

  • Gently pull the device at the point of sale to see if the cover is installed
  • If possible, use ATMs only inside banks
  • Monitor your bank and credit accounts daily to verify payments
  • Set up text or email alerts to notify you when purchases are made
  • “I told my partner I’ve seen the same thing in the news before. You just have to pull up your credit card reader if it gives a little or you feel anything about it, don’t use it,” Roach said.

The couple does plan to file an official report with police to return some of the $ 1,400 that was stolen, but there is no guarantee that they will see a penny.
