Grazing goats are taking over Fort Ord in Monterey County

Read Time:1 Minute, 37 Second

If you happen to be near Fort Ord in Monterey County this winter, you might see a herd of goats. Fear not, the goats have been hired to graze at county parks and the Bureau of Land Management. Goats will eat plants and bushes up to six feet tall, which helps reduce the amount of burning fuel. Why do they use goats for this? Goat grazing provides an efficient and sustainable method of vegetation removal and avoids the risk of fires caused by accidental sparks from tools or equipment. Their grazing removes unwanted vegetation, leaving nothing behind. While cutting vegetation with machines or hand tools leaves behind cuttings that need to be removed. At the moment, this herd has about 600 goats, but in the coming months their number may increase to 2000. For now, they will be in the area between Garrison East and CSUMB. The goats will stay over the winter and were hired through Goats R Us.
