History: Facts About Fresno County

Read Time:3 Minute, 37 Second

So… we found a little book. It is in the Library of Congress.
It’s called “Facts about Fresno County – The Wonder of California“.

The cover is red and looks like someone wrote “Fresno Co. California Chamber of Commerce” in pencil on the cover. There are several other pencil writings on the inside of the cover. Is that possibly where LOC got it from?

Inside we see the first page and the introductory paragraphs…

Fresno County Facts - California's first print Marvel page

The text specifically mentions Fresno County Chamber of Commerce so we’re pretty sure that’s who created it. You can see a hand-stamped recommendation where you can get free literature California State Board of Trade, San Francisco – so, perhaps, they were responsible for the distribution of this brochure.

It’s a really wonderful story.”

We assume that the message addressed to Visitors – “stop privileges» talks to the passengers of the train on the San Francisco-Los Angeles route.

Turning the page, we have a printed image of a street scene looking down on the original courthouse.

We look down the street towards the Capitol

You can see the Library of Congress stamp on the back of this page.

I don’t see any of those “horseless carriages” on the street, so it could be from around 1900? Any guesses?

On the next page we begin the real fun!

Fresno County Soil, Climate, and Seasons

We must remember the source of this book – Fresno County Chamber of Commerce – so there will be a bit of promotional noise in the copy.

Fresno County

It’s hard to mess with numbers. Yes, Fresno County is in the center of the great San Joaquin Valley, geographically the center of the state of California. At that time, they estimate that the city of Fresno is 200 miles south of San Francisco and 275 miles above Los Angeles. Google says it’s pretty close, especially if you drive through Tehachapi. Remember that the vine was not fixed and expanded until 1933.

Soil and climate

This part is still relevant today. We do have a great variety of soils as they explain the movement from west to east. We like that “it is always cool in the eastern mountainous regions” – but they continue to assume that the 8-10 hour drive should get there! Can you imagine?

Seasons

According to them, we have 2 seasons – dry and wet.

While we were in the midst of a drought, we are currently averaging 13 inches a year, while they only show 10. Days of sun? Currently reportedly above 300. Their average temperature is around 60? We think it might increase a bit these days.

We really enjoyed it”The nights are always cool, which ensures a complete rest with an excellent health effect» part.
