In 2023, the Hollywood sign will be transformed into its centennial

The Hollywood sign is getting a makeover to match its status as a Tinseltown icon. After pressure washing and some rust removal, workers this week began using 250 gallons of primer and white paint to spruce up the sign ahead of its centennial next year. All renovation work is expected to take up to eight weeks. Originally built in 1923, the sign proclaimed “Hollywoodland” to promote the development of the property. But after decades of neglect, the original sign was shortened to “Hollywood” before being completely replaced with a new sign in 1978. “Now it represents not only Hollywood, but the entertainment industry, and Los Angeles is the entertainment capital of the world,” Jeff Zarin of the Hollywood Sign Trust said Monday. The 45-foot-tall sign in the Hollywood Hills above Los Angeles is repainted every decade.
