According to organizers, the first Ironman California in Sacramento was a success.

Sunday marked the first Ironman event in the Sacramento area since the inaugural race was cancelled minutes before the athletes hit the track in 2021. Last year’s rain led to some sections of the track being deemed unsafe for riders.

This year, almost 4,000 athletes came to Sacramento for a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run, culminating in a spectacular finish at the California State Capitol.

“We came to California from Illinois last year to do the inaugural race in Sacramento, and we had a cyclone, so we came back,” said Amanda Condron, cheering on her husband from the sidelines with their two children.

Athletes come from all over the world to compete in Ironman events and often spend months, if not years, preparing for the event.

“I’m really excited, a little bit nervous,” Kathleen Phillips said as she cheered on her son, Austin, during the bike portion of the event.

Ironman and the city of Sacramento signed a three-year contract to host the event. According to Visit Sacramento, 2022 marks the second year.

Organizers will meet in the coming months to discuss making the event an annual highlight in the Sacramento community.
