“It is devastating, and for [Laura] — going through it to know your husband is going to be dealing with it, too,” Carrie Cellini, a family friend, told KNBC.

The outlet reported that Laura’s colon cancer has since spread to ovarian cancer.

Laura and Michael have two boys, Mike Jr., 14, and Matthew, 10, the Los Angeles Central Traffic Department said in a statement posted on social media.

“During their battle with cancer, which consists of constant treatments, surgeries and hospitalizations, they are challenged to complete simple tasks.

“They relied on friends, neighbors and church members to make life less difficult with daily tasks and doctor visits, and to make Mike Jr. and Matthew’s childhood as positive as possible,” the statement said.

Central Traffic said Matthew is a special needs child who is homeschooled and works with horses as part of his therapy, but is no longer able to attend therapy sessions due to his parents’ health.

The LAPD created the Blue Ribbon trust fund account to help raise money for the family at this difficult time.

“Knowing what a man and a family man he is, he’s a Marine, he’s been a police officer for over 25 years and he’s been married to his wife for over 25 years,” Los Angeles Police Officer Bryce Verna said. KABC.
