An Arvin police officer shot the suspect while investigating a car theft on Monday, the Kern County Sheriff’s Office said.

At about 11:30 a.m., an APD officer who was taking the stolen car report noticed a vehicle passing by him, forcing the officer to chase the suspect.

According to a KCSO release, 28-year-old driver Elvis Vilatara did not give up and crashed into agricultural machinery on Sycamore Road, east of South Edison Road, after a brief chase.

Vilatara ran out of the car, and an APD officer began chasing Vilatara on foot.

During the pedestrian chase Villiator brandished a knife, which led to a shooting involving an officer.

Vilator was beaten and taken to a local hospital due to a life-threatening injury.

According to the release, Villatora was sentenced to prison on suspicion of numerous charges after he was cleared at the hospital.
