Meghan Markle and Prince Harry deal rent-free mansion after paying taxpayers for £2.4million renovation
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly struck a rent-free deal with Buckingham Palace following the renovation of Frogmore Cottage.
The couple spent £2.4m of taxpayers’ money on renovations before making their money back when they moved across the pond to California.
They had to pay a “commercial rate” for rent Windsor Estate after the royals step down in 2020.
But an agreement was made whereby the repair money extinguished any further financial obligations, Mail on Sunday reports.
With an estimated annual rental cost of between £150,000 and £230,000, this means the Sussexes have potentially saved £690,000 over the past three years.
A Palace A spokesman said: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex contributed £2.4m to a sovereign grant which covered the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage.

“They met their financial obligations on the property.
“In line with normal practice for a sovereign grant report, the accounts have been thoroughly audited and approved by the National Audit Office and the Treasury.
“As with any such agreement between landlord and tenant, further details of the Sussex tenancy arrangements will be a private matter.”
The lump sum was divided into three sections, recorded in two sets of accounts, the grant reports, which describe government spending on the monarchy, show.
In the 2020/21 figures, this money is listed as both ‘rental income’ and ‘replenishment and other income’.
In the following year, the third part appears as “income of future periods on current liabilities”.
The accountant, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “It’s the accountant’s way of balancing the books.
“They’ll look at that deal and say, ‘Yeah, but there’s still value in the lease.’ Therefore, the value should be seen in the accounts.
“By allowing the Sussexes to stay at Frogmore Cottage without any additional payment, the Crown has paid a price and must therefore acknowledge this. They are using part of the £2.4m to do this.’
Frogmore Cottage became the official residence of Sussex in 2019.
They moved in afterwards extensive and expensive repairs who converted the property into a large family home.
But when they left the senior royals, Harry and Megan returned the money spent.
last month, the couple was evicted – and offered the keys to a five-room cottage Prince Andrei.
King Charles began the process of excluding Harry and Meg within days of the scandal involving his son memoirs There was a spare released.
A source close to the vapor told close friend and author Omid Scobi, “It all seems very final and like a cruel punishment.

“It’s like [the family] I want to remove them from the picture forever.”
