New York tops the list of most expensive places to spend your retirement years, but California is NOT on it

New York was ranked as the least affordable state to retire in the United States — while California didn’t even make the top 10.

Report by WalletHub compared all 50 states using three key metrics: affordability, quality of life, and health care.

State-specific affordability was calculated using data from a number of sources, including the US Census Bureau and the Social and Economic Research Council.

New York State ranks 10th for quality of life and 16th for health care, but last (50th) for affordability due to the state’s second-highest adjusted cost of living and third-highest tax base after Alaska rate in the country.

The report goes on to say that even a person with $1 million in retirement will only be able to cover living expenses for about 14 years — far less than the 25 years or so that a retirement can typically last.

New York is ranked as the least affordable state to retire in the United States, as well as the most expensive city in the world to live in

Concerns about retirement finances have risen this year as Americans expect to need to significantly increase their retirement savings.

According to a recent survey published by Northwestern Mutual.

But at the same time, the average American’s retirement balance fell 11 percent to $86,869 from $98,800 last year.

The expected retirement age rose to 64, up from 62.6 last year, suggesting Americans believe they will have to work longer to save enough money for retirement.

“This is a period of uncertainty for many people, mainly caused by rising inflation and volatility in the markets,” said Christian Mitchell, executive vice president and chief customer officer at Northwestern Mutual.

“We also saw an increase in spending compared to last year, not only as a result of inflation, but also because people have regained a sense of normalcy in their lives after the early days of the pandemic,” he added.

“These factors are causing many people to rethink their view of how much they will need to retire and how long it will take them to get there.”
