Northern California cats quarantined after rabid bat attack
A house cat that played with a live bat last week in Northern California has entered a “strict” 30-day quarantine after the bat tested positive for rabies, city and local health officials said.
The “owned cat” was found with a bat on Oct. 24 near the 1400 block of Inglewood Court, Yuba City said in a news release.
According to a news release, Sutter Animal Services officers captured the bat and sent it to the Sutter County Health Department for rabies testing, which determined the bat had rabies.
“One cat had contact with a bat and will undergo a strict 30-day quarantine,” city officials wrote.
It was not clear if the bat bit the cat.
City officials advised residents to immediately contact Sutter Animal Control at 530-822-7375 to report a live or dead bat in or near a home.
Bats are common in Northern California, including the Sacramento area, and rabies has occasionally been reported.
In 2018 Sacramento County health officials are looking for several people who are believed to have had contact with the rabid bat in the parking lot of the Target store in Rancho Cordova. Health officials showed up less than a month before found rabies in bats found near the Golden 1 Center in downtown Sacramento.
California requires that dogs over 4 months of age be vaccinated against rabies. Neither the state nor Sutter County require cats to receive rabies shots.
People should avoid contact with wild animals. Rabies is usually fatal in humans when symptoms appear.
