Phillies beat Padres on Bryce Harper homer, advance to World Series – Press Telegram
PHILADELPHIA — Bryce Harper hit his fifth homer of the postseason, a two-run blast in the eighth inning that turned Citizens Bank Park into a madhouse, and the $330 million slugger held off the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 on Sunday in the Sun -Diego Padres” and into the World Series for the first time since 2009.
Rhys Hoskins also hit a two-run homer to spark Philadelphia’s improbable win to the National League pennant and a shot at its first World Series championship since 2008.
Harper made hitting a monumental baseball look so easy in the postseason, easily the biggest hit of his four-year Phillies career.
JT Realmuto opened the inning with a one-out single off Robert Suarez and Harper lined a 2-2 98-mph opposite field into the left seats as another sold-out crowd of 45,485 fans rocked the stadium.
“I knew he was going to come with his heater,” the two-time NL MVP said in a television interview. “Just tried to make the best swing I could and was able to hurt with it.”
The lefty-swinging Harper connected with the righty — Padres closer Josh Hader was warming up in the bullpen — but didn’t bring him in.
Phillies reliever David Robertson was pulled after a pair of one-out walks in the ninth. Ranger Suarez made his first substitution of the season and retired Trent Grisham on a botched retirement and Austin Nola — the brother of Phils ace Aaron Nola — on a regular flight to finish him off for a hug.
Philly, get ready.
Harper, Hoskins and Crews arrive for the most unlikely World Series championship ever.
Houston took a 3-0 lead over the New York Yankees in the ALCS. Game 4 is scheduled for Sunday night in New York. The Fall Classic begins Friday night at the home of the AL champion.
Harper, who turned 30 last week, is hitting .439 (18-for-41) with six doubles, five homers, 11 RBIs and 10 runs scored in 11 postseason games. He hit 10 straight and reached base in 11 straight.
And the recognized, feared hitter can keep those streaks alive if he plays in his first World Series.
“It’s kind of overlooked because of who he is and the star that he is,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said before the game. “He’s a guy, he’s a big star who’s delivered. I can’t say enough about that.”
Philadelphia finished third in the NL East at 87-75, trailing the Braves, who have won 101 this season, by 14 games and was the last club in the majors to make the playoffs with 12 teams. After defeating NL Central Champion St.Louis 2-0 in the newly created MLB Wild Card Round, the Phillies needed just four games to knock off Atlanta, the defending World Series Champions
