(KERO) — New cases RSV, cold-like viruss, reached the highest level for any week in the past two years.

The latest figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the week ending October 15 show more than 73 hundred cases of respiratory syncytial virus in the United States

It shows that 15 percent of the PCR tests tested positive for the virus. In most people, RSV usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms that take a week or two to recover from.

However, the virus can be more serious for infants and the elderly, and this is reflected in the ongoing strain the virus is putting on some US pediatric hospitals.

Federal health officials say America’s children’s hospital beds are full more than they have been in two years. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that three-quarters of pediatric beds nationwide are currently in use.

By comparison, only two-thirds of children’s beds were used on average per day over the past two years.

Some health experts predict it will be a tough winter for Americans to survive not only RSV, but also COVID-19 and the flu.
