Russian gymnast banned for 1 year for wearing military symbols

International Gymnastics Federation announced On Tuesday, a Russian gymnast who wore a symbol on her uniform in support of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was dismissed for one year.

In March, Ivan Kulyak won a bronze medal on the bars at the World Shell Championships in Qatar.

As he stood in the rostrum, he displayed a “Z” symbol that was glued to his chest, the Associated Press reported.

According to the news agency, supporters of the war exhibited a symbol that was also seen on Russian tanks and military vehicles.

Ukrainian gold medalist Ilya Kovtun was standing on the pedestal of honor next to Kulyak.

“If on May 17, 2023, the protective measures that prevent Russian athletes from participating in competitions continue in force, the ban will continue and end six months after the lifting of these measures,” – said in a press release from the federation.

Along with the ban, Kuliak must also return the bronze medal, pay a fine of 500 Swiss francs and pay court costs of 2,000 francs.

The 20-year-old has 21 days to appeal the decision.
