Katie Lester has been at the helm of Sacramento Police for the past few months. One of her biggest concerns is the reduction of crime and violence in the city.
“I can’t imagine losing a child to violence,” Leicester said.
When Leicester began work in January, she inherited a three-year rise in felony crimes.
“Everyone wants to live in a safe community,” Leicester said. “No one wants to feel safe. There is also no short-term solution. One of the things we’re working on right now is talking about strategies and how we deal with violent offenders, and how we get the community to help us. ”
Leicester said her department is working with other city departments to develop a plan to provide services and resources in areas where crime is greatest.
She also wants to show the public that her employees are also just people.
“I think it’s very important that we recognize how important it really is to serve people,” Leicester said. “You are not only in order to handle the call, but also to solve their problem and find the best result for them.”
It’s about networking and supporting groups that work so hard to change the situation.
“Those community groups that do a great job,” Leicester said. “We have to support them just as we support law enforcement, because together it’s really public safety.”
The only thing Leicester is sure of is that the best way to reduce crime is to improve all walks of life.
“The city and our partners are really committed to building healthy neighborhoods,” she said. “It’s important. It’s not just a crime. It’s about having good schools. It’s about making sure your kids can play in the parks. It is about proper child care. It’s about getting people to work.
