San Jose is reminding gun owners of the New Year deadline to comply with the gun insurance law

To comply with San Jose’s new gun insurance ordinance, gun owners in San Jose must have a firearms insurance policy that covers loss or damage from accidental use until next year.

The city of San Jose announced Friday that gun owners. must be registered with homeowners, renters or gun liability insurance by Jan. 1 and be willing to pay $25, which will be used for the city’s gun harm reduction initiatives.

Firearm owners are encouraged to apply for an insurance certificate with the City of San Jose to verify insurance coverage.

The fee, which will be used to provide services such as firearms safety education, suicide prevention services and violence prevention programs, has no set collection date and is tentatively $25.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said anyone who drives a car understands the importance of insurance to protect accident victims and promote safety. He said gun insurance could “compensate victims who need care and encourage gun owners to use gun safes, deploy trigger locks and take gun safety classes.”

“This is no small matter in a country where 4.6 million children live in a home where guns are kept loaded and unlocked,” Licardo said in a statement.

The ordinance follows other efforts that the city says have reduced gun violence in San Jose, such as implementing gun violence ordinances, banning non-serialized “ghost guns” and cracking down on illegal purchases.
