Police say they responded to a 911 call at a Santa Barbara home on Feb. 4 at 1:33 p.m.

When first responders arrived, it was initially reported that a 3-year-old girl had fallen out of bed and was injured. The child was helped by firefighters and medics, who performed cardiac resuscitation. She was taken to Cottage Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police identified the suspect as 24-year-old Elvis Alberto Lopez, the boyfriend of the girl’s mother.

A judge issued an arrest warrant for Lopez on Saturday, February 11. Lopez was contacted by police at his family’s home and taken into custody without incident.

Lopez is being held in the Santa Barbara County Jail on $3,000,000 bond.

Santa Barbara police say they are still investigating the incident and are asking anyone with information to contact the detective bureau at (805) 897-2347.
