‘Screams and screams’ heard as crazed attacker wields knife and ax as he is knocked to the ground

Visitors to the gym in a California the Planet Fitness branch helped deal with an ax-wielding assailant who held the victim at knifepoint.

The incident that took place in the city of Corona, California, east of Los Angeles earlier this week saw members of the gym spring into action as they managed to force the suspect to the floor and hold him down until police arrived on the scene.

One of those who set up the suspect, John Keane, said he sprang into action and acted on instinct long before police arrived.

“I kind of didn’t hesitate. I had no game plan. The four of us, none of us even spoke as we walked there. We all did the same thing. And I felt that Steve, the guy in the hat, was going to come in and do something. So I thought if he goes, I’ll go because I don’t want him to get hurt too. So we didn’t really decide to do anything. We just did,” Keane said Fox News.

Keane was working out on the stair climbing machine when he heard yelling and screaming from the other side of the gym. Then he noticed the suspect holding a man with a knife.

“At first I thought it was an argument so I ignored it and after about a minute it got louder so I turned the car off and went over to her.”

Keane approached with three other men with the intention of trying to help.

“As I approached, three other guys came in at the same time and we had no game plan at all. We were just going to try to help if we could,” Keane said.

After the suspect pulled down his hood to reveal his face, the victim managed to twist his body and grab onto the suspect as gym goers screamed in the background.

Four other men were able to assist in subduing the suspect, identified as Ronald Chand, 30, of Santa Ana.

“We all just pounced on him, disarmed him and detained him at the police station. It happened quite quickly, John Keane explained. “At that moment I was not afraid. I felt the adrenaline after that, but because the victim was acting, we didn’t have time to make a decision or think about it.”

Chand was seen holding a knife and an ax, but managed to keep him on the floor until police arrived.

After emergency services arrived, the victim, later identified as 36-year-old Bollywood actor Aman Dhaliwal, suffered multiple stab wounds and was taken to hospital.  Dhaliwal is expected to make a full recovery

Rachel Wolfe was also in the gym at the time of the incident and said she was shocked by what she witnessed.

“I was horrified. I immediately called my husband and said there is a man here with an ax and another guy is bleeding and he dropped what he was doing and ran over here,” she said. Fox 11.

“It was terrible. I was afraid. I didn’t know what was going to happen. Seems like a safe place. You come, you train, you leave, but it just shows that you are not safe anywhere.”

Officials say the altercation started in the mall parking lot when the victim confronted the suspect who was acting erratically, prompting the victim to record the suspect.

Ronald Chand, 30, was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center and charged with attempted murder with bail set at $1,000,000.

The suspect then became agitated, blocked the victim’s car with his car, and then stabbed the victim several times before entering the gym.

As the suspect entered, shouts of “Respect us” and “Give me water!” could be heard.

One of those who assisted in the containment said they smelled methamphetamine on the suspect.

“When you pull into any parking lot, look around to see who’s around,” Keane said. “Always observe. Be ready to help other people too.”
