‘It was a real challenge’: Blind metal guitarist keeps on rocking

The Canadian band has a new album coming out, and you don’t have to be a fan of extreme music to relate to the guitarist’s personal story. This is the band’s first new studio album in 25 years. Listening to this, no one would know that guitarist Dave Carlo is partially blind. “The disease is called Stargardt’s dystrophy. It is a form of macular degeneration, unfortunately for me, it started in my 30s. And yes, it was a real problem,” said Carlo. Carlo also battled language cancer in 2012, takes care of his son, who has autism, and his daughter, who has borderline personality disorder. None of this prevents him from making music.
