The quake, about 4 miles deep, struck nearly nine miles east of the Seven Trees area of San Jose at 11:42 a.m., the USGS said
The San Jose Fire Department said on Twitter that it had not received any emergency calls related to the earthquake.
Nearly 18,000 people from as far away as Fresno and Sacramento reported feeling the tremor as of 12:30 p.m., according to the agency.
“It was a big earthquake” said one Twitter user in San Jose. “Shook the whole house.”
Another Twitter user said:the walls and furniture practically vibrated and shifted back and forth for a couple of seconds” during an earthquake.
“It’s okay 5.1 magnitude earthquake in San Jose it’s definitely something when you live on the 13th floor,” the user wrote.
Greatness measures released energy at the source of the earthquake, according to the US Geological Survey. It replaces the old Richter scale.
Earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.5 to 5.4 is often felt but rarely cause much damage, according to Michigan Tech. Earthquakes below magnitude 2.5 are rarely felt by most people.
