The Lakers refuse to panic entering the game against the Trail Blazers

A lot of alarm buttons have already been pushed among Los Angeles Lakers fans, but it looks like LeBron James is not worried after an 0-2 start.

The Lakers will look to calm their fans and iron out some of their shooting woes when they host the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday afternoon.

The Lakers lost their season opener against the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors on Tuesday and then lost their season opener to the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday.

The Lakers were much more competitive against the Clippers, but still shot 9-of-45 from 3-point range (20 percent), which is 22.4 percent on the season.

“Our ballclub is our ballclub. I’m definitely not going to sit here and think about what we can’t do every game,” James said. “This is not what it means to be a leader. What I know we can do is protect.”

The Lakers played well defensively against the Clippers, committing 23 turnovers and collecting 13 steals.

“I like the way we’re playing basketball right now,” James said. “We share the ball in attack. We move our bodies. We’re going to start throwing punches.”

The Lakers also seemed to dodge a bullet when Anthony Davis went down hard early in the third quarter against the Clippers. He jumped to his feet and finished the game, later telling reporters he was “pretty sure” he would be fine.

Earlier this season, Davis had missed more than 38 percent of the regular season games since arriving in Los Angeles ahead of the 2019-20 season due to injuries.

The Trail Blazers won their first two games for the first time since 2018.

They beat the Phoenix Suns 113-111 in overtime on Friday behind a 41-point Damian Lillard who got the biggest pat on the back for the shot he missed.

Lillard fed the ball to shooting guard Anfernee Simons in the final seconds of overtime, and he hit a short hook with 7.2 seconds left for the game’s final points.

“First of all, it says a lot about Dame,” Portland coach Chauncey Billups said of the latest transfer.

Lillard has historically been good against the Lakers, averaging 28 points in 32 career games compared to a 24.6 total over his 11-year NBA career.

Lillard also appears rejuvenated after playing just 29 games last season due to surgery to repair a severe abdominal injury.

Another good sign for the Trail Blazers is the play of 7-footer Jusuf Nurkic. In the match against “Phoenix” he scored 20 points and made 17 rebounds.

“I told him to keep rolling, rolling, rolling,” Lillard said. “He was very good defensively. Controlled the glass for us. Great game by Nurk.”

The Lakers are hoping for a better game from Russell Westbrook, who missed all 11 of his shots against the Clippers.

However, he was not alone in his poor shooting.

Kendrick Nunn missed all seven of his field goals and Patrick Beverley made six of seven. The trio was a combined 1 for 16 from 3-point range.

“We’ve all had bad shoots,” James said. “I had bad shots. Everyone in this league has had bad shots. Who cares. (Westbrook) had a great game. Defensively, he was set and locked down. He just didn’t make a single shot.”
