The confidential personal data of 1.8 million technicians have been exposed and made available to the public for almost three years, according to state audit report released last week. Information, including names, Social Security numbers, addresses, phone numbers, and dates of birth of Texans who filed claims for compensation with the Texas Department of Insurance, was publicly available online from March 2019 to January 2022.

The unauthorized disclosure was the result of a malfunction in the department’s web application software code that manages employee compensation information, the department said.

TDI learned of the problem on January 4, switched the app offline and fixed the problem, the department said. public announcement released in March. In January, the TDI began working with a forensic company to investigate the full nature and extent of the incident and determine “whose information was or could have been viewed by people outside the TDI,” the department said.

“The forensic investigation could not definitively rule out that certain information in the web application was obtained outside the TDI. This does not mean that all the information was viewed by people outside the TDI, ”the department said in an updated press release on Tuesday. “To date, we are not aware of any misuse of information.”

In addition to reviewing security policies, procedures, and efforts, TDI offers 12 months of credit monitoring and identity protection services free of charge to victims.

Despite raising awareness of data security issues, such incidents show that data leaks and hacks are a problem that does not seem to be improving. Last year hacked data set a recordand they has already grown by 14% in the first quarter of this year compared to last year. Millions of people have suffered from serious data hacking affecting high-profile companies as if every year.
