The Sierra Foothills are one of the most vulnerable areas in Northern California with a combination of dense vegetation and population. Once a fire breaks out in the region, there are some places from which it can be difficult to evacuate.

Take, for example, Amador County. From west to east the county stretches from the bottom of the valley to the high Sierra. Between them there are communities built into the vegetation.

Amador County Sheriff Gary Redman says a fire has been delayed in his county following recent close calls.

“It’s not about when it will happen, it’s about when it will happen,” he said.

There are some parts of the county that he worries about more than others.

“Everything east of [Highway ] 49 is really my concern, ”he said. “And with the bushes overgrown and the amount of fuel we have areas in the Fiddletown area, the Shake Ridge corridors, all the way to Pioneer, [Highway] 88, that’s a lot of our main concern. “

The network of narrow roads in this area combined with dense vegetation will make evacuation very difficult.

“The threat is extremely high,” Redman said. “There are many overgrown places in Amador County with very few entrances and exits.”

Amador County and most other counties have an alert system you can sign up to receive evacuation notifications and other emergencies in your area.

In Placer County, the sheriff looks at the town of Foresthill and the difficulty of evacuation.

El Dorada County has places like Mosquito and Swansea.

Many other communities in the Foothills also have difficult access in case of an emergency.

If you live in one of these areas, be prepared now before you get out in case of a fire.
