The winner of the record $2 billion Powerball jackpot has been named

  • Edwin Castro has been named the winner of the record $2 billion jackpot
  • Lottery officials said Castro would like to remain private
  • Castro opted to receive a lump sum payment of $997.6 million

Edwin Castro has been identified as the owner of November’s record $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot.

Castro was identified during a press conference on Tuesday California Lottery Director Alva Johnson and Deputy Director Carolyn Becker in Sacramento. An earlier tweet from the body revealed that the winner was the individual, not the group.

He was not present during the event. Castro will receive the money in a lump sum of $997.6 million.

Johnson told the media that Castro wanted to remain private and that he had declined an invitation from lottery officials to attend a news conference.

In a prepared statement, Castro said the real winners are the California school system, which will receive lottery donations. As a result of the victory, the education system will receive more than 150 million dollars.

The jackpot ticket was sold at Joe’s Service Center in Altadena, an unincorporated mountain community northeast of Los Angeles. Business owner Joe Chahayed received a $1 million bonus for selling the winning ticket.

“I would like to thank the whole community (which) supports me. And I would … I urge you to buy a ticket at this station. … You will become a winner, – said Chakhai.

The jackpot has grown to a staggering $2.04 billion after more than three months of no-one matching the numbers for the top prize.

The winning numbers were drawn on November 8 in Florida after a nearly 10-hour delay due to a problem with sales data processing.

According to the California Lottery, the odds of winning the jackpot were 1 in 292 million. The numbers that changed Castro’s life forever were 10, 33, 41, 47, 56, and the Powerball number was 10.

“He now carries the unique distinction of having won the largest amount of money in the world in the lottery. It’s literally a world record,” Becker said McClatchy News.

She continued: “There is no doubt that his life will be changed forever as a result of this message.”

The California Lottery tweeted Tuesday morning: “We’ll show #CaliforniaEducation a lot of LOVE this #Valentine’s Day when we reveal the only winner of the record #Powerball #Powerball #2.04B jackpot in November.”
