Wedding robber brothers found guilty of beating groom to death with baseball bat

Two brothers who crashed the wedding California and beat the groom to death just hours after he said his vows were convicted of second degree murder.

Ronnie Castaneda, 31, and his brother Jose Castaneda, 22, showed up uninvited to the wedding of Joe Melgoza and Esther Bustamante Melgoza on what was supposed to be their happy day on December 14, 2019.

Investigators say the brothers crashed a wedding in Chin’s backyard, but then left before returning to the party where they attacked the groom with a baseball bat.

A jury convicted them Feb. 9 of second-degree murder in Melgoza’s death, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release Wednesday.

They were also found guilty of assault with a deadly weapon for the injuries inflicted by Melgoza’s brother, Juan Bustamonte.

The sentence for the brothers is set for March 13.

Just hours after the California couple exchanged wedding vows, Melgoza was found suffered blunt force trauma to the head around 2.20am on Sunday.

Melgoza was rushed to Chino Valley Medical Center, where he died of his injuries, leaving behind his wife, Esther Bustamante Melgoza, and their daughter, who was 11 years old at the time.

Authorities say the brothers who crashed the wedding didn’t know Melgoza, but lived not far from his wife’s family’s home in the 13200 block of 17th Street, where the wedding was taking place, and showed up to the celebration uninvited, KTLA5 reported.

“They lived nearby and probably heard the celebration and went to the reception,” the district prosecutor’s office said in a release. The brothers were later seen attending the reception, dancing and taking pictures with the ladies who were at the party.

The brothers left the party, but returned later following a trail to the house, the prosecutor explained. The groom didn’t know they were back until they stood behind the fence and taunted Melgoza, telling him to jump over to the other side.

“When Melgoza and his family jumped over the fence, the brothers began beating them with bats and fists,” the release said.

“A family member managed to get the bat from one of Castaneda’s brothers, who ran into someone else’s house. They were followed by Melgoza, who ran into the courtyard without a weapon. Minutes later, the Castaneda brothers were seen jumping the fence of an unrelated residence with one bat that was never found.”

One of Jasue’s brothers told police he was never at the party, but after his arrest a photo of him and Ronnie posing with a guest was found in his front pocket.

A Snapchat video from that night also helped authorities catch the brothers for the murder.

“I applaud my colleagues’ dedication to this case and determination to seek justice for a family that has endured such unimaginable grief at a time that should be filled with love and happiness,” said San Bernardino County District Attorney Jason Anderson.

“While this conviction can never take away the pain caused by the actions of two individuals, I hope it will bring some closure to Joe Melgoza’s wife and loved ones.”

Melgoza was survived by his heartbroken new wife and daughter Lily, who was 11 at the time. Those close to him described him as a “loving son, brother, father, cousin, partner, family member and friend”.

“He always had a way of making you smile. He was there for you at any time to lend a helping hand. He was taken from us in such a tragic and horrible way,” according to a GoFundMe set up after his death.

In a video recorded at the reception and broadcast by NBC, a beaming Melgoza can be seen dancing with his beautiful bride and raising a glass with his guests, unaware of the horror that lies ahead.

“He leaves behind his daughter, Lily, who will be in the good hands of Joe’s family,” the GoFundMe notes.

“At this time we are asking for your support for the services of Joe and his little girl Lily. Isela, Joe’s mum, is devastated, heartbroken and struggling to cope.’
