More than 300 tiny homes are planned for Sacramento as a part of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s effort to move unhoused people from encampments across the state, his administration announced Thursday.

About 1,200 units will be built throughout California, including in Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose.
[–>
Sacramento County announced a similar plan for tiny homes last summer. The project was initially delayed due to community pushback and miscommunication. Called the “Safe Stay Community,” the plan was to build 100 single and double-occupancy cabins, bathrooms and communal gathering spaces at the corner of Florin and Power Inn roads, east of Highway 99.

Previously expected to open late November of last year, the county hopes to welcome people by late spring, county spokeswoman Janna Haynes told The Bee.
[–>
Here’s what we know so far about Newsom’s plan:
[–>
What are tiny homes?
[–>
Tiny homes have been built across the state and country as a way to provide safe shelter for unhoused people.
[–>
Two dozen cabin-style homes were built in Sacramento in 2020. Called the Emergency Bridge Housing at Grove Avenue, the temporary housing was developed for 48 “transitional age youth,” ages 18 to 24, The Bee reported, and provided job training, financial literacy and other services.
[–>
In November 2021, te city of Los Angeles opened a 117-unit community called New Arroyo Seco Tiny Home village. Unlike traditional housing projects, tiny homes are quicker to build and assemble and are more affordable, according to the village website.
[–>
How many are expected?
[–>
The governor’s administration said 350 small units will be placed in Sacramento, including some at Cal Expo.
[–>
Who will get to live there?
[–>
Hundreds of unhoused people camping under the W-X corridor will get the first spots to the new units, Mayor Darrell Steinberg said, according to a previous Bee report.
[–>
This is an effort to clean up the area, he said.
[–>
When will the units be built?
[–>
There’s no word yet on the timeline of the project.
[–>
Newsom will be holding a press conference Thursday afternoon at Cal Expo to talk about the project.
[–>
Are there other tiny homes?
[–>
The county approved plans for a second Safe Stay Community at 7001 East Parkway last year.
[–>
Haynes said the site will open soon after the one at Florin and Power Inn roads around mid-to-late summer.
[–>
Located in the parking lot of the County Department of Health Services building, the community will have 45 Pallet sleep cabins and can house up to 56 people.
[–>
Haynes added that the county recently purchased a 13-acre site near Watt and Roseville road and are working with an architect to plan out the location.
