An expert says that the change of seasons causes autumn allergies
Fresno, Calif. (KFSN) — For many, the beginning of autumn causes allergies. If you’ve noticed your body reacting to the fall weather, you’re not alone.
“I have a very stuffy nose in the morning that takes most of the day to get rid of,” said Abigail Nabors. “I have this little cough that just comes and goes. Also watery eyes and sneezing.’
Dr. AM Aminian says Abigail is dealing with symptoms that become more common during the change of seasons due to changes in pressure, humidity and temperature. In addition, the wind increases, which carries dust and allergens.
“With allergies, you can have a stuffy nose, a runny nose and sneezing, but you don’t feel sick,” he said. “You don’t feel low energy. You don’t have a dull headache.”
But Dr. Aminian advises to watch for fatigue and fever, which are actually signs that your symptoms may be a cold, flu, or other virus.
This time of year, he said, many people reach for nasal sprays to help them breathe easier. There are two types and it is important to know how to use them.
Decongestants are intended for short-term relief.
“You shouldn’t use them for more than 3-5 days,” he said. “Besides, it’s counterproductive.”
There are also steroid nasal sprays that are designed for seasonal use. He says you should consult your doctor about how to use them for your specific symptoms.
“They don’t provide instant relief,” Dr. Aminian said. “They have to be used for a while to build up.”
He recommends reducing exposure by wearing a mask when it’s windy or dusty, rinsing your nose to remove particles from your nose, and showering before bed to remove particles from your skin and hair.
There are also other solutions for those with more severe cases.
“We can desensitize patients. We can relieve you of this sensitivity, this allergy,” said Dr. Aminyan. “We can get it under control with allergy shots.”
