Bentley Continental GT – the history of the special black logo

Read Time:3 Minute, 57 Second

The all-new Bentley Continental GT first appeared before the general public at a special show at the end of August 2017 in the British manufacturer’s home city of Crewe. The international debut took place a little later, on the catwalks of the international motor show in Frankfurt. The novelty is a full-fledged new third generation. She received a new platform, also used in the Porsche Panamera, a radically different gearbox and all-wheel drive system, a modern engine and a completely redesigned interior with a new layout. Interior design has reached a fundamentally new level. The torpedo received a more classic and monolithic structure with a small visor. Its upper part is trimmed with leather with stitching, and under it there are overlays made of precious woods and glossy black piano lacquer.

In the very center of the front console is a rotating prism with three faces. By default, there is a multimedia system screen with a huge touch screen. At the request of the owner, the prism can turn other sides. On the second one there are three analog instruments with classic dials, and on the third one there is a stub. As for appearance, it will not be difficult to distinguish the third generation from the previous generation. Although the manufacturer tried to preserve the branded features of the model as much as possible, its proportions have changed significantly. The grille slid a little lower and increased in size and stopped protruding. The hood has become visually longer, and the front part itself seems flatter and narrower. Also changed the layout of the air intakes on the front bumper.

Bentley Continental G-T is a two-seater premium four-seater car of the Gran Turismo class. It is offered in two versions: coupe and convertible. The closed version is 4805mm long, 1954mm wide, 1405mm high and 2851mm between wheelsets.

The car is based on the modular MSB platform inherited from the Panamera. It cannot be said that it came up in its pure form, after a series of tests, a number of improvements were made to it, which also migrated to the donor model. So, for example, to increase acoustic comfort and reduce vibration, the power structure was finalized, and in order to withstand the heavier body of the Continental GT, the air suspension received a third chamber that evaded the energy consumption of the struts and the range of adjustments. So ground clearance can be increased by 20 mm, and to improve handling, drop 28 mm from the front and 20 mm from the rear axle. Among other things, the chassis is equipped with active anti-roll bars and power steering with a variable gear ratio, but a fully controlled chassis, like the Panamera, cannot be ordered.

Specifications

Under the hood of the Bentley Continental GT is a W-shaped six-liter petrol unit with twelve cylinders. It has one twin-scroll turbocharger for every three cylinders.

They are integrated directly into the exhaust manifold and have their own cooling circuit. The same engine is installed in the Bentayga crossover, but with less peak power. Fuel is supplied according to a combined scheme, directly to the cylinders, as well as to the intake manifold. To reduce fuel consumption, half of the cylinders are switched off at low loads, thanks to camshafts with moving heads. As a result, the engineers managed to squeeze out 635 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 900 Nm of torque in the range from 1350 to 4500 rpm of the crankshaft. All the power is digested by an eight-speed dual-clutch preselective robot. The platform does not provide for the installation of a more classic torque converter. The all-wheel drive scheme has also changed. From now on, for the most part, the torque, for the most part, is transmitted to the rear axle, and part of it is transferred to the front using a multi-plate clutch.

Bentley symbol (black)

Bentley’s “Big B” badge consists of two wings that represent Bentley’s proud claim that the marque is the closest thing to real wings. Between these two wings is a circle, inside which is placed the letter “B” – the first letter of the brand name. This logo has become a real automotive classic, as, in fact, the models produced by Bentley. And some say that this sign is similar to the ancient occult symbol in the form of a winged solar disk.

The Bentley logo contains three primary colors: black, white and silver. While white signifies purity and charm, black represents the company’s excellence and elegance.

Silver reflects the sophistication, creativity and excellence of Bentley products. The color scheme of the Bentley logo combines the inimitable British aristocracy and modern design.
