Biden will receive a COVID-19 booster and launch a campaign to promote vaccines
President Joe Biden will get an updated COVID-19 booster on Tuesday as he unveils his administration’s plan to promote updated vaccinations.
Updated booster shots became available early last month, and in the nearly six weeks since, a small percentage of Americans have received the shot. The shots have been updated to include protection against the omicron variant of COVID-19.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 20 million Americans have received an updated booster against COVID-19, meaning less than 8% of people age 12 and older have been vaccinated.
Overall, about 216 million Americans are eligible for the vaccine, as those who complete the primary series can receive an updated booster.
The White House said the government will release ads in many local markets to “highlight the importance of getting an updated vaccine to protect the ones we love and the protection offered by updated vaccines against COVID-19.” The government will also place pop-up clinics in places like Head Start, nursing homes and community health centers across the country.
The Biden administration said it is working with national drugstore chains such as Rite Aid, CVS and Walgreens, which will promote the vaccines through “text messages, calls and emails to customers, multimedia marketing campaigns and a range of incentives.”
Biden, who had previously been vaccinated and was vaccinated, was initially ineligible for the updated COVID-19 booster. The guidelines state that people with past COVID-19 infections should wait 60 days before receiving an updated booster.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the vaccine has been provided free of charge with public funds. However, Congress has rejected efforts to fund future rounds of the COVID-19 vaccine.
It is not yet clear when the funds will run out, but last week This is reported by Pfizer it will charge $110 to $130 for the mRNA vaccine after the government stops paying for them.
