Matthew Perry reflects on his relationship with Julia Roberts

In his new book, Matthew Perry talks about his high-profile relationship with Julia Roberts in the mid-1990s and why it ended. an excerpt published in The Times of London said that Roberts had expressed an interest in appearing on Friends, but that “she would only do the show if she could be in the storyline.” At the urging of “Friends” creator Martha Kaufman, Perry sent Roberts three dozen roses and a witty card to “woo” the “Pretty Woman” star into taking the job. I was always sure that she was going to break up with me. Why wouldn’t she?” he writes. Alluding to his crippling issues, which he identifies as the basis of his past addictive behavior, Perry adds, “I wasn’t enough; I could never have enough; I was broken, bent, unloved. So instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I parted ways with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts.” CNN has reached out to a representative for Roberts for comment. In her memoir, Perry also talks about her struggles with alcohol and addiction and how eventually led him to sobriety.”I wanted to share when I was safe from going back to the dark side of things,” Perry recently told People about the new book. – I had to wait until I was quite sober – and away from the active disease of alcoholism and drug addiction – to write it all down. The actor reminisces in his new memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Awful Thing, according to an excerpt released by Times of Londonthat Roberts has expressed interest in appearing on Friends, but “she’ll only be on the show if she can be in [Chandler’s] storyline.”

At the urging of “Friends” creator Martha Kaufman, Perry sent Roberts three dozen roses and a witty card to “woo” the “Crushes” star into taking the job.

“Thus began a three-month courtship through daily faxes. This was before the Internet, before mobile phones – all our exchanges were done by fax. And there were many of them; hundreds,” Perry writes, describing how “three or four times a day I sat by my fax machine and watched the piece of paper slowly unfold its next message.”

The faxes soon “turned romantic”, leading to “five-hour” phone conversations before the pair even met face-to-face.

Finally, Roberts appeared at Perry’s door.

“When I opened it, there she was, on the other side was a smiling Julia Roberts. I think I said something like, ‘Oh, that Julia Roberts,’” Perry says in flashback, recalling her Chandler-esque reaction.

From there, the pair quickly began a relationship and were a couple when Roberts appeared on an episode of Friends that was set to air after the Super Bowl.
