A Haunted Story: Betsy Ross’s House in Philadelphia Reveals the Creepy Realities of Life in the 18th Century

PHILADELPHIA — The Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia is celebrating the spooky season with candlelit tours that shed light on the horrific conditions many had to face in the 18th century.
It was during the time period that General George Washington commissioned Betsy Ross to create the very first American flag.
Betsy was married three times during her life.
She lost her first husband during the war and her second husband was captured by the British. She married her third husband, John Claypool, and it was her longest marriage.
Visitors can see Betsy’s grave, next to Claypool’s, at the Betsy Ross Home, her third and final resting place.
The house is also the site of the death of Charles Henry Weisgerber, the artist known for his painting The Birth of Our Nation and for preserving the Betsy House for all to enjoy today.
