Unilever announced on Monday that it has recalled some dry shampoo sprays because they may contain elevated levels of benzene.

The propellant used in products sold under the Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI (Rockaholic and Bed Head) and TRESemmé brand names appears to be a source of benzene.

Benzene is a a human carcinogen which can cause leukemia, bone marrow cancer, and life-threatening blood disorders.

However, daily exposure to benzene in recalled products at levels found during testing, “are not expected to cause adverse health effects,” Unilever said in its notice of withdrawal.

This is not Unilever’s only benzene-related recall in recent months. A company that produces a variety of beauty and food products, reminded two Suave brand 24-hour protection aerosol antiperspirants in March after benzene was found in samples during an internal inspection, CBS News informed.

Unilever is not the only company with such problems either.

Procter & Gamble reminded aerosol dry shampoo and conditioner last December from six of its brands because of benzene. Three other companies also recalled products this year for the same reason as the others last year, CBS News informed.

Benzene is found in both gasoline and cigarette smoke. Humans can also ingest the chemical by touch petroleum products or consumption of contaminated food and drink, CBS News informed.

Anyone who has aerosolized dry shampoos at home should pay a visit UnileverRecall.com seek compensation.
